Spring Cleaning Tips
It’s time for the deep clean! Spring cleaning helps to ward off the buildup of mold, mildew and household dust – a not-so-healthy collection of dust mites, decomposed insects, pest droppings, pet dander and more. Also, dirt tracked in from outside can contain traces of pesticides and other harmful substances, not stuff you want floating around.
These kinds of household contaminates are often small enough to be inhaled and can lead to respiratory issues. That’s one good reason to start cleaning. Another reason: it gives you the chance to make sure everything is in proper order in terms of safety. Lastly, an annual spring cleaning keeps clutter under better control and brings a fresh, vibrant energy to your space.
Spring cleaning checklist
- Clear all surfaces to give them a good wipe down, especially in the kitchen and other areas where water can pool.
- Don’t forget to dust ceiling fans. Use a damp cloth and let dry thoroughly before turning on again. (Damp blades will attract more dust.)
- You should wash bed linens in hot water every week to remove dust mites, but the next time you wash your pillowcases, toss your pillows in too. Check labels for specific instructions.
- Vacuum sofas and chair cushions.
- Wash drapes and clean carpets under beds and large furniture. They’re both magnets for dust mites.
- Clean mold and mildew from bathrooms.
- Wash fabric shower curtains using a detergent with bleach. Replace old plastic liners.
- Soak shower heads in vinegar and water to prevent hard water deposits from building up.
- If you haven’t already, install exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms to remove moisture, and make sure the dryer vent leads outside.
- Have your central air system inspected and cleaned.
- Clear out the fridge, wash down the shelves and drawers with soapy water and restock with healthy items.
- Clean refrigerator coils and drip pans, which are breeding grounds for contaminants, and clean around the door seal, to keep it working properly.
- Wash windows inside and out, but wait for the shade because sunshine will cause streaking.
- Clear and repair rain gutters so water flows freely away from the house.
- Go through your medicine cabinet and discard any expired medications. See disposal guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
- Check to make sure your smoke detectors are working properly.
